In 2001, volcanic eruptions occurred at Usu, Miyakejima volcano and others. No persons were injured. At Miyakejima volcano, high SO2 flux still continued and all of the inhabitants are still evacuating out of the island.

USU (Hokkaido)
Small phreatic eruption at Kompirayama crater continued and volcanic ash emission and air-shocks were observed but they had stopped in September. The magmatic activity is considered to have stopped. Usu page
Miyakejima (Izu islands)
High level volcanic gas emission is continueing. Volcanic tremors and small air shocks were observed and some of them were accompanied with small volcanic ash emission. About 4000 persons in the island are still living out of the Miyakejima island.Miyake page
Iwojima (Ogasawara islands)
Small submarine eruption and phreatic explosion were oberved in September and October.
Sakurajima (Kagoshima)
Vulcanian eruptive activity is still continueing. 110 explosions occurred in 2001.
Satsuma-iwojima(Kagoshima, Tokara islands)
Many small volcanic earthquakes were observed. Volcanic tremors and ash falls were observed.
Suwanosejima(Kagoshima, Tokara islands)
Active eruption and seismic activity continued.
